Team Bayelsa has surged to the top of the medal standings at the ongoing 2025 National Sports Festival in Ogun State, as the multi-sports event gains momentum across Abeokuta, the state capital, and other competition.
The riverine state currently leads the pack with a total of nine medals—six gold, two silver, and one bronze.
Trailing closely behind is Oyo State, which has secured one gold, one silver, and one bronze. Lagos State follows in third place with a tally of ten medals: three gold, four silver, and three bronze.
Cross River State, which initially led the medal table after day two, has now dropped to fourth, maintaining their three gold medals without further additions. Rivers State rounds out the top five, having claimed two gold, three silver, and one bronze medal.
Meanwhile, the Invited Junior Athletes—participating as the symbolic “38th state”—have made an impressive showing, currently sitting in sixth place. They have earned two gold medals, one silver, and one bronze, continuing the strong form that saw them win the previous four editions of the festival.
A total of 71 medals have been awarded so far, comprising 23 gold, 23 silver, and 25 bronze.
The competition for medals is set to intensify on Wednesday, with events in weightlifting, women’s badminton, squash, and more set to produce podium finishes.
Additionally, swimming and tennis will commence at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex, while gymnastics and volleyball are scheduled to begin at the Alake Sports Complex.
