The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has announced plans to host the seventh edition of the National Council on AIDS (NCA), aimed at advancing Nigeria’s HIV response in light of evolving global aid dynamics. This announcement was made in a statement released on Thursday and signed by the Chairman of the Planning Committee, Dr. Daniel Ndukwe.
Scheduled to take place in Lagos, the event will be supported by the Lagos State Agency for the Control of AIDS. The theme of the meeting is “Advancing National HIV Sustainability Agenda in the Changing Global Policy on Aid.” It is expected to bring together stakeholders from government ministries, civil society organisations, development partners, and affected communities.
The NCA, established under the NACA Act of 2006, serves as the country’s highest coordinating body for a multi-sectoral response to HIV. The seventh session is set to evaluate the progress made so far while developing strategic directions for future HIV prevention, care, and treatment initiatives across Nigeria.
Ahead of the meeting, NACA Director-General and Chairman of the Council, Dr. Temitope Ilori, stressed the need to maintain momentum in the HIV response, particularly in light of shifting donor priorities. She noted that as the donor landscape continues to change, Nigeria must adopt bold strategies to ensure HIV services remain accessible and resilient. According to her, the Council provides a unified platform to chart this collective path forward.
Strengthening HIV Response Through Multi-Sectoral Collaboration and Health System Integration
The council’s programme will centre on three thematic tracks: advancing the national HIV sustainability agenda amid changes in global aid; multi-sectoral approaches to sustaining HIV and other developmental disease interventions; and strengthening sub-national structures for long-term sustainability and improved health system efficiency.
In addition to technical discussions, the council will also revisit the 12 resolutions adopted during the sixth session of the NCA. Stakeholders are encouraged to submit policy and implementation memoranda for deliberation during the meeting.
The seventh National Council on AIDS is expected to serve as a comprehensive national forum to align multi-sectoral efforts not only in HIV but also in related areas such as tuberculosis, malaria, reproductive health, and broader health system strengthening.
