Prof. Simon Ortuanya’s Appointment as VC: A New Dawn for UNN?

UNN's New Era: Prof. Ortuanya's Historic Appointment as 16th VC

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Hail Great Varsity of Nigeria, where young men and women do come to seek for knowledge. This is my school, so this news hits home for me. For years, we have watched UNN deteriorate, no Senate Building, too many old structures from the 1960s falling apart including my hostel which has been neglected for soo long, and a level of neglect that has made the school look far from what it was meant to be. Meanwhile, younger universities in Nigeria are developing at a much faster pace.

Now, we have a new Vice Chancellor, Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, the 16th in UNN’s history. Some call him the New Hope, from the information I have gathered, he is not just another academic appointment. He is from the host community of Nsukka, which is a first in UNN’s history.

He has a strong track record Dean of Law at ESUT, former Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Commissioner for Education, Associate Dean at UNN’s Enugu Campus, and even international academic experience with a Doctor of Juridical Science from Loyola University Chicago. These are not small achievements.

UNN’s High Hopes and Heavy Burden: Can Prof. Ortuanya Deliver Real Change?

Some say he is capable, others say he might not be the absolute best choice for the role, but looking at his profile, I believe he has what it takes to make a real difference. His experience in both academia and public service could help him handle UNN’s challenges better than Other Contestants.

That being said, expectations are high. He carries the burden of history, restoring the dignity and pride of UNN. We need improved infrastructure, better welfare for staff and students, and a modern, efficient administration. Many of us see him as someone who could finally bring change, but with that hope comes the pressure not to fail.

This is his moment to prove that UNN can rise again. For the sake of all that have passed through this school and for us still here, I truly hope Prof. Ortuanya delivers and rescue the people in the Lion’s Den.
