Cybersecurity Alert: NCC Issues Warning

The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) has issued a warning to citizens to be prudent when sharing personal information online.

This advisory warning came amidst several surge in compromised email accounts, hacking incidences, and outright scamming of internet users in Nigeria.

According to reports, the NCC urged internet users to research critically before submitting personal information on any website. Given the significant growth in mobile subscriptions in Nigeria, the warning is timely.

It was further reported by Platforms Africa, mobile subscriptions across the four major GSM networks in Nigeria increased by 195,313 in July 2021, bringing the total to 187.4 million. The four network operators, MTN, Airtel, Globacom, and 9mobile, activated 580,082 new lines in June, which further expanded the database to 187.2 million.

However, the telecom operators had previously lost over 20 million subscriptions due to the government’s suspension of new SIM activations from December 9, 2020, to April 19, 2021.

To apply safety measures online, experts recommend being mindful of the information shared on websites and social media platforms. This includes avoiding posting sensitive personal information, using strong passwords, and adjusting privacy settings to limit who can view your online activity.

As the threat of online scams and hacking incidents continues to rise, it’s essential to stay vigilant. To further safeguard your digital presence, consider reviewing your privacy settings, using two-factor authentication, and regularly updating your passwords.
