In a concerted effort to combat crude oil theft and illegal activities in the maritime domain, the Nigerian Navy conducted a series of successful operations from April 20 to 22, 2025, under the auspices of Operation DELTA SANITY.
These coordinated operations, carried out by naval units across Bayelsa, Delta, and Imo States, resulted in significant interventions, including the arrest of several suspects, deactivation of illegal refinery sites, and the seizure of stolen crude oil.
The operation began on Sunday, April 20, when Nigerian Navy Ship SOROH apprehended four individuals suspected of vandalizing pipelines in Bayelsa State. The suspects were found in possession of tools typically used in pipeline vandalism near the Renaissance Africa Energy Company Pipeline at River-Kolo Creek.
The following day, on Monday, April 21, the Forward Operating Base ESCRAVOS team discovered and deactivated 2 illegal refinery sites in Oteghele, Obodo Omadino Community, Warri South-West Local Government Area (LGA), Delta State. These sites contained two refining ovens and ten dugout pits filled with large quantities of stolen crude oil.
In the same vein, Nigerian Navy Ship SOROH intercepted two vehicles on Monday, April 21, at Olodo Community in Bayelsa State. These vehicles were found to be loaded with several sacks of illegally refined petroleum products. On Tuesday, April 22, Naval Outpost ONITSHA apprehended two suspects who were attempting to attack a SEEPCO oil facility in Oguikpele Community, Ogbaru LGA, Anambra State.
The suspects were caught in possession of a locally-made rifle and ten machetes. Investigations revealed that they were allegedly involved in the brutal killing of three soldiers during an attack on June 11, 2024.
The same day, Nigerian Navy Ship DELTA discovered and deactivated another two illegal refinery sites, including nine dugout pits filled with stolen crude oil and illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) in Bernnet Island and Obodo Omadino Community, Delta State.

The three-day coordinated operation resulted in the arrest of 6 suspects, the deactivation of 4 illegal refinery sites, and the seizure of 2 vehicles. In total, 9 dugout pits were destroyed, alongside large quantities of stolen crude oil and illegal petroleum products. These operations highlight the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to eradicating crude oil theft and other illicit activities in the maritime region, as directed by the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla.
This initiative underscores the Navy’s continued efforts to maintain the security and integrity of Nigeria’s maritime environment, ensuring that the country’s vital resources are protected from the clutches of criminals.
