The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has imposed a substantial fine of ₦766,242,500 on MultiChoice Nigeria over multiple violations of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act). The decision comes after an investigation launched in the second quarter of 2024, following concerns regarding possible breaches of subscribers’ privacy and the unauthorized cross-border transfer of personal data belonging to Nigerian citizens.
In a statement issued by Babatunde Bamigboye, Head of Legal, Enforcement & Regulations at the NDPC, the Commission confirmed that MultiChoice Nigeria was found to have infringed upon the privacy rights of its subscribers, as well as individuals indirectly linked to those subscribers. The investigation revealed that the company had engaged in unlawful international transfers of data without appropriate legal safeguards, in clear violation of national data protection regulations.
The NDPC criticized the company’s data processing practices as “patently intrusive, unfair, unnecessary, and disproportionate,” describing them as a serious violation of the constitutional right to privacy guaranteed under Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Commission stressed the importance of protecting the data of Nigerian citizens, highlighting the broader implications for national security, economic development, and the rule of law.
While MultiChoice Nigeria was initially instructed to implement corrective actions in accordance with standard procedures, the NDPC noted that the company’s responses were inadequate and demonstrated a lack of cooperation. This unsatisfactory level of compliance was a key factor in the Commission’s decision to impose the significant monetary penalty.

In addition to the fine, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner of the NDPC, has ordered a thorough investigation into all channels through which MultiChoice collects personal data from Nigerians. He emphasized that any outlet found to be non-compliant with the NDP Act will face similar penalties, reinforcing the Commission’s stance on upholding data protection laws.
