Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has reiterated his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election. Speaking on Sunday Politics, a programme aired on Channels TV, Obi dispelled rumors suggesting he might accept a vice-presidential position under former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or any other candidate.
“Nobody has ever discussed with me whether to be A or B or C,” Obi emphasized. “I am going to contest for the President of Nigeria, and I believe I’m qualified.”
Obi also addressed the recent coalition of opposition parties, which adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a common platform ahead of the 2027 elections. He clarified that this move was not a departure from the Labour Party nor an act of disloyalty.
“There is nothing anti-party in the decision,” he stated. “We are not abandoning where we are. We are going there together. What is constant is that we have agreed to work together.”

On concerns raised about his association with certain political figures viewed by critics as controversial, Obi defended the importance of inclusive leadership in national development.
“The job of a leader is to change,” he remarked. “You need everybody. If you want to serve, you must serve everybody.”
Obi also criticized the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu, condemning its governance approach and promising a more disciplined and competent leadership if elected in 2027.
“We’re going to ensure that we remove Tinubu’s government by all lawful means,” he declared. “I will govern within the law, I will bring civility to Nigeria, and I will appoint competent people into office. I will not be Minister of Petroleum.”
Obi’s statements come amid heightened efforts by opposition figures to unite ahead of the 2027 elections, reflecting growing public concern over economic challenges and governance issues under the Tinubu administration.
