The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.
This declaration follows the earlier announcement of a seven-day period of national mourning by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in memory of the late statesman.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on behalf of the Federal Government, stating that the holiday was approved by President Tinubu.
“In furtherance to the seven days of National Mourning declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, the Federal Government has declared, 15 July, 2025, as a Public Holiday in honor of the late former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo stated.
The holiday is intended to allow Nigerians reflect on the legacy of the late president and his service to the nation.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the decision was made in line with the President’s directive. “The Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, following the approval of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR,” the statement added.
Late President Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.
