May Agbamuche-Mbu, a distinguished legal practitioner with over three decades of professional experience, has been appointed the Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Nigeria.
Hailing from Delta State but born in Kano, Agbamuche-Mbu attended St. Louis Secondary School in Kano before proceeding to the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), where she earned her Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree in 1984. She was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1985 and later attended the College of Law, London, qualifying as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales.
She holds a Master of Laws (LLM) degree with a specialization in Commercial and Corporate Law from Queen Mary and Westfield College, London. In addition, she completed two postgraduate programs in International Dispute Resolution and International Business Law, reflecting her deep academic and professional engagement with international legal systems.
A respected expert in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), Agbamuche-Mbu is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK), Nigeria Branch, where she also served as Secretary. Her contributions to the field of arbitration and dispute resolution have earned her recognition within and beyond Nigeria’s legal community.
Agbamuche-Mbu’s Journey to INEC Leadership
Between March 2010 and November 2011, she served as the sole solicitor on the Presidential Projects Assessment Committee (PPAC), where she evaluated a vast portfolio of unfinished public projects across Nigeria. In 2016, she was appointed to the Ministerial Committee tasked with developing a strategic roadmap for the Solid Minerals Sector, further demonstrating her commitment to national development.
Before joining INEC as a National Commissioner, Agbamuche-Mbu was the Managing Partner at Norfolk Partners, a Lagos-based law firm. She also made her mark in legal journalism as the editor of THISDAY LAWYER, a widely read weekly legal pullout of THISDAY newspaper.
Between January 2014 and September 2016, she authored over 120 legal editorials under her column, LEGAL EAGLE, offering in-depth commentary and expert opinion on diverse legal and public policy issues. Her body of work remains a reference point in public advocacy and intellectual discourse both in Nigeria and abroad.
