Nigeria was plunged into widespread darkness on Monday following the collapse of the national electricity grid after several major power plants lost generation.
Checks by our correspondent confirmed that the grid went down at about 3:00 p.m., cutting power supply to homes and businesses across many parts of the country.
Data obtained by reporters showed that electricity generation, which had earlier peaked at approximately 4,800 megawatts on Monday, dropped sharply to about 139 megawatts by 3:00 p.m.
The exact cause of the grid collapse could not be immediately confirmed. However, the incident occurred at a time when the Nigerian Independent System Operator was reportedly working to ramp up power generation after recent gas supply constraints linked to pipeline vandalism.
As of the time of filing this report, all 22 power plants connected to the national grid had lost generation.
