FG Approves ₦1 Trillion Kano Metropolitan Rail Project

The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) has approved the construction of a ₦1 trillion metropolitan rail service in Kano State, aimed at transforming the state’s transportation system, boosting economic and social activities, and reducing traffic congestion in urban areas.

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, disclosed this while addressing members of the state’s delegation who participated in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition held in Borno State.

“The project aims to provide a modern, efficient, and affordable mass transit system, connecting key districts and enhancing mobility for the residents,” the governor said in a statement issued on Thursday, January 29, 2026, by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature.

“It is expected to stimulate trade and investment, improve the quality of life, and position Kano as a major transportation hub in Northern Nigeria,” he added.

Kano Aligns with NRC’s National Rail Development Strategy

Governor Yusuf also commended the federal government’s urban renewal drive, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to supportive policies and infrastructural development that will drive economic expansion, progress, prosperity, and improved living standards in the state.

The development aligns with earlier disclosures by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), which announced on November 6, 2025, that the federal government would unveil a comprehensive national railway development roadmap to ensure rail connectivity across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to the NRC, the national railway project is expected to significantly enhance the country’s transportation network, improve living conditions, and raise overall comfort standards, with the roadmap designed to enable every state to access and utilise national rail corridors at no implicit cost.
