The Lagos State Police Command has commenced a comprehensive audit of police personnel attached to individuals, groups, and personalities in the state. The exercise aims to account for officers, ensure proper deployment, and prevent misuse of police firearms and equipment.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohudare M. Jimoh, while addressing the press on the 27th of February 2025, emphasized that the periodic audit is a statutory procedure conducted nationwide. He stated that the process helps identify officers assigned to unauthorized duty posts and ensures that those without valid approval are withdrawn and reassigned to police stations, divisions, and area commands to enhance public security.
“Lagos State, with a population exceeding 20 million, has less than 18,000 police personnel. It is crucial to deploy officers effectively to provide security for all residents,” CP Jimoh said. He stressed that the exercise is strictly in the public interest and not targeted at any individual.
The Commissioner confirmed that the audit of police personnel attached to Hon. Mojisola Meranda had been completed, with four armed officers returned to her for protection. He also urged individuals and business executives with invalid approvals to revalidate them or apply afresh through the Inspector-General of Police.
Furthermore, CP Jimoh highlighted that the Special Protection Units (SPU) at the Force Headquarters are responsible for assigning police personnel for security duties. He revealed that some approvals in Lagos State could not be verified, and affected individuals are advised to reapply for fresh approval.
Regarding Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, CP Jimoh clarified that police personnel were deployed to him based on a recent application citing threats to his life and family. However, the police command was not aware of the reported break-in at the Speaker’s office. He reaffirmed the Lagos Police Command’s neutrality in political matters, stating that their responsibility is limited to maintaining law and order.
To reinforce security at the Lagos State House of Assembly, additional Police Mobile Force (PMF) units, Counter-Terrorism Units, Special Protection Units, Bomb Squads, and other security teams have been deployed, along with armored vehicles and patrol teams. The Commissioner assured Lagosians that security remains under control and urged the public to continue their activities without fear.
“The Lagos Police Command remains committed to neutrality and ensuring the safety of all residents. Law and order will be maintained across the state,” CP Jimoh concluded.
