Lagos, Nigeria – Detectives from the Area F Command of the Lagos State Police Command have apprehended a 22-year-old suspect, Malik Opeyemi, for allegedly operating an online blackmail scheme. The suspect reportedly posed as a woman on social media platforms to deceive unsuspecting men into engaging in nude video calls, which he later used to extort money from them.
According to a statement signed by CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, anipr, mipra, Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Ikeja, 20th of May, 2025, Opeyemi was arrested on May 16, 2025, following a complaint lodged by one of his victims at the Area Command. Acting swiftly, detectives launched an investigation, tracked the suspect to Oyo State, and subsequently transferred him to Lagos for further interrogation and prosecution.
Online Blackmailer Nabbed After Extorting Millions from Over 30 Victims
According to police findings, the suspect began the fraudulent operation in January 2025 and has successfully extorted over Four Million Naira (₦4,000,000) from more than 30 victims. His tactics included requesting a so-called “subscription” fee of ₦25,000 from his targets in exchange for access to sexually explicit content, only to later blackmail them using recorded footage.
During his arrest, law enforcement recovered two Android phones—an Itel and a Samsung—from the suspect. Forensic analysis of the devices revealed a trove of explicit images and videos of multiple victims, strengthening the case against him. Opeyemi has since been charged to court.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to curbing cybercrime and protecting residents from digital exploitation. He urged the public to remain cautious in their online engagements and to promptly report any suspicious activities. The Commissioner emphasized that all perpetrators of cyber-related crimes will be relentlessly pursued and brought to justice.
