The Lagos State local government election held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, was characterized by a notably low voter turnout in several areas, including Ojodu Berger axis, Oshodi, and Ikeja. In some polling units, residents expressed frustration over the delayed arrival of electoral officials from the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).
In polling units such as Adebowale 014 and Jide Taiwo pooling unit 075, security agents were present, but LASIEC officials were nowhere to be found as of 10 am. This led to a significant delay in the voting process, with some residents choosing to leave without casting their ballots.
A similar situation was observed in at least 10 polling units in Oshodi, Wards E1 and E2, where voters and party agents arrived as early as 7 am, only to find LASIEC officials absent
Generally, the low voter turnout was evident in various parts of the state, with some residents opting to stay indoors or engage in leisure activities rather than participate in the election. In areas like Bode Thomas, Polling Unit 070, Ward B, Taoreed Street in Coker Aguda LCDA, a resident noted that the turnout was unimpressive, with many people deciding not to vote due to a lack of interest or confidence in the process.
Residents attributed the low turnout to various factors, including disillusionment with the electoral system. Many residents felt that their votes wouldn’t count, citing a lack of transparency in past elections.
Some voters believed the outcome was predetermined, making their participation unnecessary.
Although security measures, including movement restrictions, may have deterred some residents from participating, Late arrival of electoral officials and voting materials may have hindered the voting process.
