The Lagos State Government has intensified its enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics across the state, confiscating prohibited items from several supermarkets. The crackdown is part of a broader initiative aimed at mitigating the environmental hazards associated with plastic waste.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, made this known in a video shared on X.com on Wednesday. The footage showed enforcement officers seizing items such as single-use plastic cups and products containing plastic straws from supermarket shelves.
“Our enforcement team today visited Blenco Supermarket in Lekki to enforce the ban on single use plastics,” Wahab captioned the video.
“This action is part of our wider efforts to ensure compliance with the state’s directive on phasing out SUP, which poses serious environmental risks and worsens flooding across Lagos,” he added.

According to Wahab, the enforcement team also carried out operations at Blend and Temple Hill Supermarkets in Ire-Akari, Jendol Supermarket in Jakande Estate, Ejigbo, as well as Lastprize and Reno Supermarkets located along Liasu Road in Idimu.
He affirmed that the state would continue to monitor compliance, carry out enforcement, and collaborate with businesses to encourage the adoption of sustainable alternatives that protect the environment.
The enforcement exercise, which began on July 1, follows the expiration of an 18-month moratorium granted to businesses to phase out banned plastics and switch to environmentally friendly options.
Under the new regulation, the sale and use of disposable plastic items—particularly black nylon bags—are strictly prohibited. The government emphasized that this initiative forms part of a broader clampdown across markets and retail outlets to uphold environmental protection laws in Lagos State.
