The Management of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has strongly condemned the violent incident that claimed the life of a guest during a bonfire event on campus, reaffirming its commitment to the safety and security of students and the entire university community.
The unfortunate incident occurred on Friday, September 12, 2025, during a bonfire night organized by the Students’ Association of the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies.
The event was reportedly infiltrated by miscreants from a neighboring community, who instigated violence. In the ensuing disturbance, a guest at the event, Mr. Chiebonam Nweze popularly known as Power-Autos was stabbed. Despite prompt efforts to save his life, he tragically passed away before receiving medical attention at the University Medical Center.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Mr. Inya Agha Egwu, Acting Public Relations Officer of UNN, confirmed that neither the deceased nor the assailants were students at the university. He added that the University Security Unit, in collaboration with the Anti-Cult Unit of the Nigeria Police, has successfully apprehended all those responsible for the attack.
UNN Imposes Stricter Security Measures and Bans Social Events Beyond 6PM After Tragedy
The management expressed its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the late Mr. Nweze, praying for comfort during this period of grief.
Following the tragedy, the university announced stricter security measures to prevent a recurrence. Movement within the campus was temporarily restricted as part of immediate response efforts. Furthermore, the management has reviewed its guidelines for student social activities, directing that all events must now be held strictly during the daytime and under the supervision of the University Security Unit.
Social events of any kind will no longer be permitted on our campuses beyond 6:00 p.m., the statement read.
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all members of the university community and assured the public that every necessary measure will be taken to forestall similar incidents in the future.
