After days of tension and permutations on the likelihood of who becomes the next president of Africa’s most populous nation, the chairman of the independent national electoral commission, INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, in the wee hours of today, declared the APC presidential candidate, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu as winner of the 3023 presidential election.
The 70 year old former lagos state governor, came out tops in 12 states of Nigerias 36 states, polling a total number of 8,794 726 votes, almost 2 million votes more than his closest rival, Atiku Abubakar of the Pdp who despite also winning 12 states, polled a total of 6,984,520 and the labour party Peter obi polled 61,101,533 votes in 12 states to clinch the 3rd position. With a very distant 1,496,687 Rabiu Kwankwaso of theNNPP came 4th.
A certificate of return will be issued to Bola Ahmed Tinubu by the inec boss today in Abuja.
Meanwhile, there has been calls from various quarters and the opposition parties for an outright cancellation of the elections that was berated by international observers and party supporters as marred with irregularities. Some analysts say aggrieved party’s will have a swell time in court, challenging the process and eventual outcome.
