Prof. Mohammad Kabiruo Isa Calls for a New Era of Good Governance in Nigeria
Prof. Mohammad Kabiruo Isa, Professor of Governance and Administration, has stressed the need for Nigeria to have a new platform for good governance at the 2025 Nigeria leadership series discussion organized by Africa Leadership Group (ALG)
The discussion which was very impactful took place on Thursday, 5th Feb. 2025 and it had in attendance communication experts and stake holders in civil society organizations.
While presenting his paper with the theme Nigeria Pathway to Achieving Good Governance, Prof. Mohammad Kabiruo pointed out that Nigeria has been suffering from persistent institutional decay citing instances where robbers now pay their death roll out to commit crime. He highlighted that people who are to enforce the law fail in the accountability scale with governance
He went further to say that leadership in Nigeria should be based on credibility and legitimacy stating that, we need new platforms for good governance where the policy of divide and rule adopted from colonialism would not thrive. However, he declared that good governance is part of Africa, but it was subjugated and denied to us which apparently has propelled many to elect to office based on personal gains and ethnicity
He stated that good leadership should be/must consist of vision, purpose and sacrifice. Hence, we must first define who we are and incorporate the value of good governance because it is not alien to us.
As emphasis, he cited an example of what transpired in Singapore where the government invested in human capital by sending many abroad to study and return to make impact. He disclosed that for us to be assured of good governance, we need to decolonize ourselves, first define who we are and incorporate the value of good governance by electing people to office based on their impact in society as well as ensuring that it’s people with equity and clean hands.
Corroborating with Prof. Mohammad Kabiruo, Dr. Yemisi Ransome kuti advised that good governance can be achievable if we focus on demanding for change from one sector before another like power sector while Dr. Aisha Abdusalam from Nigeria Defense Academy (NDA) further added that corruption is a bad element for good governance.
Nevertheless, Prof. Kabiru Isa concluded by advising that we should advocate for zero tolerance on corruption.
