Pope Francis has been confirmed dead at the age of 88. His death was announced by the Vatican hours after he greeted Catholic faithfuls that attended mass on Easter Sunday.
It was reported that Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, Cardinal Kevin Farnell announced the pontiff’s passing on Monday, April 21, 2025.. He disclosed that he died at exactly 7:35 am this morning at his residence in the Casa Santa Marta within Vatican City.
As reported earlier today, the announcement made by Cardinal Farrel read, ” Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow, I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell described Pope Francis as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus who dedicated his life to serving the Lord and the Church. ” He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised.” He said.
” With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and True God”.
Pope Francis’ Health Struggles and Funeral Plans: A Final Act of Faith
Pope Francis had been recovering from a recent hospitalization for bilateral pneumonia. He was discharged from the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital after 38 days and returned to the Vatican to continue his recovery.
Throughout his life, Pope Francis struggled with respiratory issues, having undergone surgery to remove part of his lung in 1957 due to a severe infection.
The Pope had previously approved new funeral protocols in April 2024.
According to the Master of Apostolic Ceremonies, Archbishop Diego Raveli the late pope had requested they simplify the rites and focus on the faith of the Church in the Risen Body of Christ.
Raveli added that, ” the renewed rite seeks to emphasize even more than the funeral of a Pastor and disciple of Christ and not of a powerful person of this world. “.
The next pope will be chosen by the College of Cardinals, the Catholic church’s most senior figures appointed by the pontiff, who will make their way to Rome in the next few days for the conclave.
