ButAs Lagos State holds its local government elections scheduled for Saturday, July 12, 2025, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Friday, July 11, 2025, issued a statewide call encouraging residents to participate actively and peacefully in the democratic exercise.
Addressing the electorate, the Governor described the upcoming polls as a critical opportunity for citizens to shape governance at the grassroots level. He emphasized the importance of local government as “the closest tier of government to the people,” noting its role in providing essential services and driving development within communities.
“This election is not just a constitutional process; it is a powerful expression of your voice and your civic responsibility; it is your right,” the Governor stated.
He urged all eligible voters to turn out in large numbers and cast their votes for Chairmen and Councilors who will represent their interests across the state’s local councils.
To ensure a peaceful and credible process, the Governor announced that security agencies would be strategically deployed to polling units and surrounding communities. He assured voters that law enforcement officials would be on ground to protect voters, election workers, and electoral materials.
“I have directed that security agencies be strategically deployed across all polling units and communities,” he said. “Law enforcement officials will be present to protect voters, electoral officials, and election materials.”
The Governor also expressed confidence in the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), stating that the commission had given assurances of its readiness to conduct a smooth and transparent election.
Appealing for decorum and respect for democratic values, he called on political parties, candidates, and stakeholders to uphold peace and fairness throughout the process.
“I urge all political stakeholders, party agents, and candidates to conduct themselves with decorum, and to uphold the principles of peace, fairness, and respect for the rule of law,” he added.
He specifically encouraged youths to act as “ambassadors of peace and democratic responsibility,” and to avoid any form of violence or disruption.
Concluding his address, the Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to free, fair, and transparent elections, reiterating Lagos State’s position as a pacesetter in democratic governance.
“Let us show the world once again that Lagos stands for peace, progress, and participatory governance.”
