The killing of a woman and her six children in Dorayi, Kano State, has renewed calls from civil society for justice, accountability and stronger action against the drivers of violence, including drug abuse.
The Youth Society for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Social Vices (YOSPIS) condemned the attack, describing it as “deeply disturbing” and a serious violation of the right to life. In a statement issued at the weekend and signed by its Executive Director, Zainab Nasir Ahmad, the organisation said the incident had shocked public conscience and underscored growing insecurity within communities.
YOSPIS expressed condolences to the bereaved family and residents of Dorayi, noting that the scale of the killings had heightened fear and grief in the area. The group called on the authorities to ensure that those responsible are prosecuted, stressing the importance of justice in restoring public confidence.
“Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done, to restore public confidence and serve as a deterrent,” the statement said.
Kano CSO Links Killings to Drug Abuse Crisis
The organisation commended the Kano State Police Command for the swift arrest of suspects linked to the killings, urging law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough, transparent and expedited investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crime.
Beyond the immediate case, YOSPIS linked the incident to wider social challenges, particularly the impact of drug abuse on public safety. The group warned that substance dependence often fuels violent behaviour and contributes to the breakdown of families and communities.
It called on the Kano State Government, security agencies, community and religious leaders, parents and civil society organisations to strengthen efforts to combat drug abuse through prevention programmes, rehabilitation services, youth empowerment initiatives and community-based interventions.
“Fighting drugs is not optional; it is essential to securing lives and restoring social order,” YOSPIS said, adding that violence against women and children must never be tolerated under any circumstances.
