The Edo State Government has announced the postponement of the resumption date for all public and private schools in Edo Central Senatorial District.
In a statement on Monday, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, said the postponement would last till further notice to allow the state address certain exigencies aimed at improving the welfare of pupils.
He added, “The new date of resumption will be duly communicated to the public in due course.”
“Parents, guardians, and all education stakeholders within Edo Central Senatorial District are kindly requested to take note of this development and comply accordingly,” Dr. Iyamu further stated.
Okpebholo Addresses Crisis After Ekpoma Demonstration
The decision comes after the zone was engulfed in crisis following a peaceful protest over insecurity on Saturday, which later turned violent. Hoodlums reportedly hijacked the demonstration, attacking traders at the livestock market, killing goats, and beating cows—incidents that were captured in a viral video.
The protest also saw the palace of the Onojie of Ekpoma, Zaiki Anthony Abumere II, vandalised, an act condemned by Governor Okpebholo.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed that one person was shot by a soldier during the unrest, and added that the case had been referred to military authorities for further investigation.
The crisis began on Saturday in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, when residents staged a protest over rising insecurity, including kidnappings and the killing of a youth on Friday night. Protesters blocked a major highway to express their grievances, but the demonstration was later overtaken by youths who attacked Hausa traders at the livestock market, slaughtered goats, and caused widespread panic in the area.
