Three officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have been hospitalized after sustaining gunshot injuries during a raid in the Jahi area of Abuja on Thursday night. The attack occurred as the NDLEA operatives were concluding their operation, which had been based on intelligence and surveillance reports.
According to a statement signed 18th April, by the Director Media and Advocacy NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja, Femi Babafemi, the operation targeted an uncompleted building in the NNPC area of Jahi, where the officers recovered a significant haul of illicit drugs.
This included 74 bottles of codeine, 10 liters of codeine syrup, 48 grams of tramadol (225mg), 4.9 kilograms of skunk (a strain of cannabis), and five Android phones. However, as the team was leaving the premises, they came under gunfire from unknown assailants.
Three NDLEA officers were injured in the attack, with one sustaining a gunshot wound to the rib and the other two being shot in the back and leg. The wounded officers were initially treated and stabilized at the Police Clinic in Garki Area 1 before being transferred to the National Hospital in Abuja for further medical attention.
NDLEA Chairman/CEO, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), expressed gratitude for the swift support provided by the staff at the Police Clinic. In a phone call to the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, Marwa personally thanked the director for overseeing the treatment of the injured personnel.
While in Kano on official duties, Marwa also reached out to the wounded officers by phone, wishing them a speedy recovery. He reassured them that the NDLEA would employ all available resources and collaborate with other security agencies to apprehend those responsible for the attack.
