The Lagos State Police Command has arrested and detained a 20-year-old social media influencer, Habeeb Hamzat, popularly known as “Peller”, following a viral video that showed him engaging in reckless driving during a live-streamed session, which resulted in a serious road accident.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, December 14, 2025, sparked widespread reactions online after the suspect was seen driving dangerously before crashing, thereby endangering his own life and that of other road users. According to the police, the act amounted to a deliberate attempt to commit suicide and posed a grave threat to public safety.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Command disclosed that Hamzat was arrested and detained for further investigation. “His action constitutes a deliberate attempt to commit suicide and endangered the life of other innocent people,” the police stated.
Police Assure Prosecution as SCID Investigates Case
The statement, signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive investigation. The police assured that the outcome of the probe would be made public upon conclusion.
“The case is currently being investigated by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). The outcome of the investigation will be made public and the suspect will be charged to the court of competent jurisdiction in accordance with the law,” the statement read.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Olohundare Jimoh, issued a strong warning to social media influencers, content creators, and members of the public against using digital platforms to promote or engage in reckless, dangerous, or unlawful acts.
He cautioned that such conduct would no longer be tolerated, stressing that “the full weight of the law will be applied on any offender.” The Commissioner further urged all road users to strictly adhere to traffic regulations, noting that the Command remains committed to maintaining public peace and ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state.
The Lagos State Police Command reiterated its resolve to clamp down on acts capable of breaching public peace, particularly those amplified through social media platforms, as part of efforts to promote responsible conduct and road safety.
