JUST IN: NDPC Not Revenue Making Commission, Says Dr Olatunji

The Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has expressed satisfaction with the significant milestones it has recorded both locally and internationally within two years of its establishment, despite not being set up as a revenue-making commission.

The NDPC is a Federal Government organ charged with the responsibility of protecting the personal data and sensitive personal data of all Nigerian citizens, playing a central role in shaping the country’s data privacy ecosystem.

Speaking during a virtual press conference attended by TechnologyMirror, the National Commissioner of the NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunji, revealed that the commission’s activities have placed Nigeria on the global map of data privacy, attracting growing international attention to the nation’s data protection framework.

According to him, beyond strengthening data privacy, the NDPC has contributed significantly to economic activity within the ecosystem, creating over 23,000 jobs and generating approximately ₦7.2 billion in revenue through its operations.

However, Dr Olatunji stressed that the NDPC is not a revenue-generating agency of the Federal Government, noting that the commission was established primarily for the good of citizens and the protection of their data rights.

He made this clarification while speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a media capacity-building programme, where he highlighted the commission’s positive strides in strengthening Nigeria’s data protection landscape. He explained that capacity building has emerged as a key pillar of the NDPC’s impact within just two years of operation.

Dr Olatunji added that the past two years have been marked by steady growth, learning, and international recognition, largely driven by deliberate investments in capacity development across the data protection ecosystem.
