The Nigeria Police Force has clarified recent reports surrounding the arrest and detention of Mr. Omoyele Sowore, condemning what it describes as a wave of disinformation aimed at maligning the police and its leadership. According to the Force, Sowore, a known figure who “manipulates public narratives and weaponizes propaganda,” was lawfully arrested on credible allegations of criminal offences including forgery and cyberstalking.
In a statement, signed 8th August 2025, by DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer at Force Headquarters, Abuja. The Police emphasized that the arrest complied fully with the law, observing constitutional safeguards and due process. “Mr. Sowore was arrested based on corroborated evidence and in strict adherence to legal provisions,” the statement read. The Force also confirmed that Sowore was released on bail within the constitutionally mandated 48-hour period, as stipulated under Section 35(4) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.
Sowore has been formally informed of the charges against him and is expected to face a competent court in the coming days to answer to the allegations. The Police reassured the public that “every step taken has been lawful, transparent, and free from malice or political bias.”
Addressing widespread claims of torture or inhuman treatment during Sowore’s custody, the Nigeria Police Force dismissed such allegations as “false and grossly misleading.” The Force reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy on torture, consistent with the Anti-Torture Act of 2017 and Nigeria’s commitments under international human rights laws.
Sowore’s Medical Refusals and Detention Under Court Order Amid Police Investigation
Regarding an image circulating of Sowore with a bandaged arm, the Police explained that “the bandage was part of his personal belongings when he voluntarily honored the Police invitation before his arrest.” The Inspector-General of Police has ordered an internal probe to investigate how Sowore had access to the bandage while in custody, particularly given Sowore’s refusal to undergo medical examinations by independent Police medical teams.
Two medical teams, one led by the Medical Director of Muhammadu Buhari Police Hospital and another by the Force Medical Officer, were dispatched on August 7th and 8th, respectively, to conduct independent medical examinations. Sowore declined access on both occasions. The Police stated, “While respecting his right to refuse, it is important to note that independent medical verification was offered twice and rejected twice.”
Sowore’s continued detention is based on a valid remand order from a competent court, the Police affirmed, reiterating that all actions are legally grounded. The Force called on media outlets, civil society, and the public to exercise responsibility and avoid sensationalism that could undermine public trust or compromise ongoing investigations.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to protecting human rights, upholding the rule of law, and pursuing justice without fear or favor,” the statement concluded. “No individual, regardless of status or social media influence, is above the law.”
