The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Shamsideen Adio, for allegedly beating a dispatch rider to death on Tapa Street, Lagos Island.
The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday following an altercation between Adio and the dispatch rider over allegations that the rider had scratched Adio’s vehicle.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the confrontation escalated when Adio, allegedly assisted by some of his colleagues, physically assaulted the rider until he lost consciousness.
NURTW Member Linked to Previous Violent Attacks, Police Confirm Rider’s Death
According to reports, Adio is known in the area for violent attacks on commercial operators. Residents claimed that he had recently assaulted a tricycle operator, leaving the victim hospitalized.
A police officer familiar with the case confirmed that the dispatch rider died as a result of injuries sustained during the beating.
The victim died from the injuries and the suspect has been arrested. He is now at the State Criminal Investigation Department,the officer said.
As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, could not be reached for comment.
