The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 55-year-old man, Samsideen Oladiti, popularly known as “Shamelon,” in connection with two violent incidents on Lagos Island involving a case of murder and another of assault occasioning harm.
According to the Command, the suspect is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, where a discreet investigation is ongoing.
In a statement issued on Friday, September 19, 2025, and signed by DSP Babaseyi B. Oluseyi, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, the police detailed that on September 17 at about 3:00 p.m., the suspect allegedly attacked a dispatch rider with a helmet and his fists, inflicting severe injuries. “The victim was rushed to hospital, placed on oxygen, and is currently receiving medical treatment,” the statement noted.
The Command further disclosed that on September 18, another complaint was lodged against the same suspect in relation to an earlier incident that occurred on August 28. During that altercation, Oladiti allegedly used a metallic ring to repeatedly strike a man on the head and face. Despite receiving medical attention, the victim succumbed to his injuries and was confirmed dead on September 17, with his remains deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.
Police Restore Calm at Sandgrouse Market, Assure Justice in Ongoing Murder Case
Following news of the death, sympathizers of the deceased staged a violent protest at Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island, where the suspect’s office is located. The protest escalated as angry youths set two motorcycles belonging to the suspect ablaze, sparking unrest in the area.
Reacting swiftly, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, personally led a team of mobile policemen, conventional officers, and tactical squads to the scene to restore calm. “He swiftly restored calm, prevented further breakdown of law and order, and assured residents that the suspect is in custody and will be promptly prosecuted after investigations are concluded,” the police statement read.
The Command appealed for calm and urged residents to remain law-abiding. “The Lagos State Police Command wishes to assure members of the public that justice will be diligently pursued in all the cases against the suspect,” DSP Oluseyi said, quoting the Commissioner of Police. He further called on Lagosians not to take the law into their own hands but to cooperate fully with ongoing investigations.
