Heineken, the pioneer and largest brewery company in Nigeria has announced transferring ownership of its brewery in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo, to Mauritian-based Synergy Ventures Holdings Ltd for a symbolic price of €1.
According to reports, the move is aimed at protecting the jobs of around 1,000 people who depend on the Bukavu site and preserving essential local services.
It was disclosed that the brewery has been affected by the ongoing conflict in eastern DR Congo, with the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group rapidly seizing control of the facility earlier this year. Heineken had previously suspended operations in the region due to security concerns. Under the new arrangement, Synergy Ventures will take over full responsibility for brewery operations, employee protection, and tax obligations.

However, Heineken has secured a three-year buyback clause, allowing it to reclaim the brewery if security and economic conditions improve.
The transfer is part of Heineken’s efforts to ensure the well-being of its employees and the local community. The company’s Congolese subsidiary, Bralima, continues to operate in other regions of the country not directly affected by the conflict
Additionally, the international community is working assiduously to de-escalate the fighting and stabilize the region with mediation efforts led by the United States, Qatar, and African regional bodies.
