The University of Ibadan (UI) has directed 226 undergraduate students to withdraw from the institution over poor academic performance, specifically low Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).
The decision was reached after the university’s Senate convened last Monday to ratify the results of the 2024/2025 academic session for both graduating and non-graduating students. During the meeting, the Senate approved that any student with a CGPA below 1.0 be advised to withdraw from the university.
As a result of the approval, the affected students will no longer have access to the institution’s portal for course registration and other academic activities.
Faculty Breakdown of Students Withdrawn Over Low CGPA
Those impacted span across faculties and levels, ranging from 100 to 500 level. According to an official of the university who spoke to reporters, the Faculty of Science recorded the highest number of withdrawals, with 79 students affected. The Faculty of Technology followed with 45 students, while 35 students were withdrawn from the Faculty of Agriculture.
The College of Medicine and the Faculty of Education each had 18 students asked to withdraw. The Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources recorded 10 affected students.
Other faculties with affected students include Arts with nine; Economics and Management Sciences with four; Law with three; Veterinary Medicine with two; and Environmental Design and Management with three.
The withdrawal of students over poor academic performance has become an almost annual exercise at the institution, a development student has nicknamed “tsunami.” In 2018, a total of 408 students were asked to withdraw under similar circumstances.
Meanwhile, newly admitted students resumed physically on campus on Monday for the commencement of the 2025/2026 academic session.
