The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has joined forces with 60 other Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) to address growing concerns over privacy risks posed by Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools.
It was reported in a press release signed by the Head Legal Enforcement and Relations. Babatunde Bamigboye that this collaboration is centered around the “Joint Statement on AI-Generated Imagery and the Protection of Privacy,” which highlights the misuse of AI-powered tools to create non-consensual imagery, defamatory content, and other harmful materials, particularly affecting children and vulnerable groups.
The NDPC emphasized on the need for organizations to implement strong safeguards, ensure transparency, provide effective content removal mechanisms, and comply fully with applicable data protection laws.
NDPC Aligns AI Oversight with National Strategy
It was further disclosed that this move is part of Nigeria’s efforts to ensure responsible AI use, following the initiative for development of the National AI Strategy led by the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr ‘Bosun Tijani.
Additionally, the NDPC has also issued the General Application and Implementation Directive (GAID), mandating privacy by design and privacy by default in AI tool development and deployment.
However, the National Commissioner /CEO of the NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji has directed that the NDPC will use Compliance Audit Returns (CAR) by data controllers and processors of major importance as a yardstick to monitor AI use.
