Lagos Police Explain Viral Video: Warn Against Lawlessness After Ikorodu Incident

The Lagos State Police Command has provided clarity on a viral video circulating online, which appears to show Taskforce officers driving a vehicle against traffic in the Ikorodu axis.

According to the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh in a Press briefing on Monday 16th March 2026, the incident occurred on Friday, March 13, 2026, when officers were on routine traffic enforcement patrol at about 6.30am

The police statement revealed that the driver of the vehicle, identified as Lateef Adeyemo, had made a wrongful turn and attempted to evade arrest when he was intercepted by operatives of the Safer Highway Patrol and Protection around Ikorodu axis leading to a collision with a commercial mini-bus.

The suspect’s vehicle was subsequently handed over to Taskforce officers, who used minimal force to remove him from the roadway and restore traffic flow.

It was disclosed that Adeyemo was charged with four counts, including conduct likely to cause breach of the peace, driving in a prohibited direction, obstruction of public officers, and malicious damage. He was remanded in prison custody for failing to meet bail conditions.

However, the police emphasized that the viral video was taken out of context and did not capture the full circumstances of the incident since the viral video was recorded by the suspect while his vehicle was being conveyed to Alausa

The Command also stated that preliminary investigation further indicated that the suspect instigated bystanders, leading to brief mob action against the Taskforce Policemen. They urged motorists to obey traffic regulations and cooperate with law enforcement officers

The Lagos State Police Command reiterated its commitment to enforcing the law professionally and ensuring safety on Lagos roads warning that anyone who violated the law would face the full consequences as officers would not succumb to intimidation or blackmail in the discharge of their duties.

enforcement of activities on the BRT corridors across Lagos State.

Lagos State Task Force: Mandated to enforce traffic laws and regulations across the State.

Rapid Response Squad (RRS): Handles rapid
response to emergencies and conducts visibility patrols to enhance public safety.

Eko Strike Force: Responsible for crisis intervention, tactical response, and de-escalation of volatile situations within Lagos State. The Lagos State Police Command remains committed to enforcing the law professionally and ensuring safety on Lagos roads.
