A passenger train on the busy Kaduna–Abuja route derailed on Tuesday morning, resulting in several cabins overturning and causing widespread panic among passengers.
Eyewitnesses have described the situation as chaotic, with numerous passengers scrambling for safety following the incident.
Although the exact cause of the derailment has yet to be confirmed, it remains unclear whether there were any casualties.
This latest disruption adds to the troubled history of the Kaduna–Abuja rail line, which has experienced several incidents in recent years, including the deadly armed attack in March 2022.
Authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding Tuesday’s accident.
The derailment comes just a week after the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) reported another fault on the same corridor, when one of the train’s coach wheels developed a hot axle near Rigasa Station in Kaduna. The NRC explained that the fault, caused by excessive heat, was quickly managed and the train was returned safely to Kaduna.
At the time, the corporation warned of temporary capacity issues, especially for business class passengers, and issued an apology for the inconvenience.
