Nigeria has recorded an estimated 400 per cent increase in Electric Vehicle (EV) adoption between 2020 and 2025, according to the Executive Chairman and Managing Director of LUG West Africa, Mr. Imran Oladimeji Hamzat. He said the surge reflects the country’s growing potential as a major market for electric mobility.
Hamzat stated that global trends indicate that by 2030, electric vehicles could account for about 10 per cent of vehicles on Nigerian roads. He made this known at the LUG West Africa 2025 end-of-year celebration held in Lagos, which was attended by the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat; the Ogun State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat; alongside other government officials, industry stakeholders, and dignitaries.
Announcing the company’s expansion plans, Hamzat disclosed that LUG West Africa intends to establish a local assembly plant for street lighting infrastructure in 2026, while also installing over 250 electric vehicle charging points across Lagos State.
He explained that the company is working with international partners to integrate solar-powered street lighting systems with EV charging stations, leveraging renewable energy to support sustainable transportation.
According to him, Nigeria currently has over 11 million vehicles, and an 8 per cent EV adoption rate would translate to about 850,000 electric vehicles nationwide. This, he said, would significantly increase the demand for public charging infrastructure, noting that not all EV owners would be able to charge their vehicles at home, thereby making roadside charging stations essential for uninterrupted mobility.
Solar Infrastructure to Power Electric Vehicle Charging in Lagos
Hamzat added that LUG West Africa has already installed more than 50,000 solar-powered street lights across Lagos State, creating a strong foundation for EV charging integration. He noted that an electric vehicle requires approximately 240 volts for an hour of charging, which can deliver a driving range of about 40 miles, roughly the distance between Lagos and Abeokuta.
He further explained that by integrating seven monocrystalline solar panels, each producing 36 volts, sufficient power can be generated to charge one electric vehicle. This configuration, he said, would cover about a 200-metre stretch of roadway. Based on existing infrastructure, Lagos State alone could support an average of 250 charging stations.
Hamzat stated that the proposed 250 charging stations in Lagos would be adequate to support the projected number of electric vehicles nationwide. He added that the company already has a functional prototype and expects to produce a test sample by 2026.
On the broader scope of the initiative, he said the project is designed to be Pan-Nigeria, with plans to collaborate with global partners to deploy the solution across the country. He also confirmed that LUG West Africa is currently constructing an assembly plant in Lagos to assemble street lighting systems and manufacture components for EV charging stations, a move expected to boost job creation and local capacity development.
The end-of-year event also served as an opportunity to recognise staff members for their dedication and outstanding performance across various departments. The celebration concluded with the presentation of cash rewards and gifts, with prizes ranging from ₦100,000 to ₦600,000. In addition, 10 solar-powered fans were distributed, while one guest emerged as the winner of the ₦600,000 grand prize.
