Prof. Chris Piwuna, a distinguished Psychiatric Consultant and Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos (UNIJOS), has been elected as the new President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). His election took place during the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress (NDC), which was recently held at the University of Benin, Edo State.
Prof. Piwuna emerged victorious in a keenly contested election, defeating Prof. Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi. His election marks a significant transition in the leadership of ASUU, as he takes over from Prof. Victor Emmanuel Osodeke, who served as ASUU President since 2021 and is a professor at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.
Before his emergence as ASUU President, Prof. Piwuna had served as the union’s National Vice President, a role he held for several years, during which he was deeply involved in negotiations with the federal government on issues concerning university funding, staff welfare, and the revitalization of Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.

With a solid academic background in psychiatry and years of experience in union leadership, Prof. Piwuna brings both professional expertise and institutional knowledge to the presidency of ASUU. His tenure is expected to focus on strengthening academic standards, improving staff welfare, and sustaining ASUU’s longstanding advocacy for better educational policies in Nigeria.
The 23rd NDC, where he was elected, is the highest decision-making body of the union and is held periodically to elect new leaders and review ASUU’s strategies and national engagement.
Prof. Piwuna’s election has been met with congratulations from academic communities and union members nationwide, as he prepares to steer the union through its next phase of activism and policy engagement.
