The Federal Government has disbursed N11.8bn loans to 6,842 academic and non-academic staff of tertiary institutions across Nigeria under the Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund.
The beneficiaries were drawn from 141 institutions, including federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, as part of efforts to improve staff welfare and financial stability in the education sector.
The TISSF, introduced in August 2025, is a programme funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund. It is designed to support the well-being, career development, and financial security of tertiary institution workers nationwide.
The initiative, jointly managed by the FME and TETFund, provides zero per cent interest loans to eligible academic and non-academic staff. Under the scheme, beneficiaries can access loans of up to N10m to meet personal and professional needs.
Data published on the website of the Federal Ministry of Education and obtained by our correspondent showed that 34,000 applicants from 219 institutions have been successfully verified so far.
Federal universities account for the highest number of applicants with 59 per cent, followed by polytechnics with 23 per cent, while colleges of education make up 18 per cent of the total verified applications.
FG Loans Scheme Expands with Teacher, School Support
The Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative also revealed that 240 e-tricycles have been distributed across 12 institutions as part of broader support measures within the education sector.
Key facts published on the ministry’s website include: “Loans up to N10m per staff (0% interest); N11.8bn disbursed to 6,842 beneficiaries from 141 institutions.
“34,000 verified applicants from 219 institutions; Federal universities (59%), polytechnics (23%), COEs (18%); minimum five years to retirement required for eligibility.”
Other ongoing programmes under the initiative include the EduRevamp Teacher Platform, a digital training system launched earlier this year to strengthen teachers’ professional capacity, and the School Safety Portal, developed in partnership with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to improve school security management.
According to the ministry, the EduRevamp platform, launched during the first National Teacher Summit in January 2026, has already recorded “37,000 registered users, with 18,000 teachers fully enrolled in its training modules.”
The platform offers audio and video lessons, case studies, and certification opportunities aimed at continuous professional development for educators across the country.
The School Safety Portal, established under the School Safety Act of 2025, currently contains data on more than 156,000 geolocated schools, helping authorities strengthen safety monitoring and response systems nationwide.
