The Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has expressed his utmost satisfaction over the outstanding performance of 15 Nigerian students he hosted to represent the country at the Huawei Global ICT Competition in China who returned home with exceptional results.
In a post on X, Dr. Tijani said he was “delighted to host the outstanding Nigerian students” after their performance at the year-long competition, which is run through the Huawei ICT Academy programme.
It was reported that the students were drawn from 6 universities across Nigeria which includes – Ahmadu Bello University, (ABU), Igbinedion University, Okada, (IUO), University of Lagos, UNILAG, Federal University of Technology, Minna, FUTMINNA, University of Port Harcourt, UNIPORT and Nasarawa State University, Keffi, (NSU)
They competed in 4 tracks: Network, Cloud, Computing, and Innovation after advancing through national and regional stages of the Huawei ICT Academy programme.
Nigeria Shines at Huawei ICT Global Finals with Multiple Prize Wins
At the global finals in China, Team Nigeria secured two Grand Prizes in the Network and Innovation tracks comprising of two First Prizes in Cloud track and one Second Prize in Computing track
With that haul, Nigeria emerged as the most successful country in the competition outside China for the third-year running. The feat underscores the growing depth of ICT talent and technical training in Nigerian universities.
Dr. Tijani singled out the Innovation Team from Ahmadu Bello University for special praise. The team developed a solution that leveraged Huawei’s AI Cloud uses and Ascend technologies to develop a solar – powered diagnostic tool capable of testing for malaria and intestinal parasites in under 3 minutes, without requiring internet connectivity.
He stated that “It is a powerful example of how young Nigerians are applying technology not only to compete globally, but also to solve some of our most pressing local challenges.”
Notably, the solution directly addresses gaps in rural healthcare access where power and internet connectivity are often unreliable, making it both technically advanced and locally relevant.
Dr. Tijani declared that the federal government is keen on backing the students to scale their work.
“I am looking forward to connecting these young innovators with the right support and exposure to ensure their passion and creativity can be further built on,” he stated.
The Huawei Global ICT Competition is one of the world’s largest student tech contests, aimed at developing ICT talent and bridging the global digital skills gap. Nigeria’s 3-year dominance outside China positions the country as a leading source of young tech talent in Africa.
Additionally, the students’ win adds to recent momentum in Nigeria’s digital economy push, as the ministry continues to prioritize skills development, youth innovation, and global competitiveness under the National Digital Economy Policy.
