The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to commercial bus operators, particularly drivers of mini buses, locally known as ‘Korope,’ against route violations and illegal parking across the state.
The Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Sola Giwa, delivered this warning in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos. The statement was signed by Taofiq Adebayo, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
Giwa emphasized the crucial need for strict adherence to traffic regulations, particularly regarding unauthorized route deviations. He stated, “This resolute directive is in alignment with the government’s overarching initiative to instill orderliness on Lagos roadways and ensure the uninterrupted flow of vehicular movement across the metropolis.”
The Special Adviser directed all ‘Korope’ operators to immediately cease using unauthorized routes, stressing that any defiance would result in legal sanctions. He further noted that LASTMA operatives had been instructed to intensify enforcement strategies aimed at curbing reckless driving and unlawful practices that disrupt the city’s traffic system.
In addition to route violations, Giwa condemned the indiscriminate occupation of public roads for unauthorized parking and loading activities. He explained that these practices significantly contribute to traffic congestion and pose safety risks to other road users.
Moving forward, Giwa mandated that all commercial bus operators restrict their operations to designated bus stops and terminals to prevent unnecessary disruptions to vehicular movement.
“Illegal parking and flagrant route violations have metamorphosed into a grave menace in Lagos, particularly due to the arbitrary conduct of mini-bus operators,” he stated.
“Such transgressions, which impede traffic fluidity and endanger public safety, will no longer be condoned.”
He further stressed the importance of compliance with designated routes for security purposes, adding, “Strict adherence to designated routes is imperative for security purposes, as it acts as a deterrent against unscrupulous elements who exploit commercial vehicles, particularly ‘Korope,’ for illicit activities.”
