Lagos Bridges: Julius Berger Releases Rehabilitation Update

Julius Berger Nigeria Plc has provided an update on the ongoing bridge rehabilitation programme in Lagos State, following its engagement by the Federal Ministry of Works in 2023. The project is designed to tackle long-standing structural deterioration affecting key infrastructure across the state.

Work on the rehabilitation exercise began in January 2024 and covers four major transport links: the Third Mainland Bridge, Carter Bridge, Iddo Bridge, and the Iddo Bridge Underpass. The programme is focused on addressing deep structural issues, especially underwater components impacted by marine corrosion, tidal movements, and heavy traffic pressure over time.

According to the company, rehabilitation work on Carter Bridge targeted weakened underwater sections and substructure elements in order to reduce the impact of corrosion and tidal forces. Physical works on the bridge were completed in January, with the project now in its close-out phase.

For the Third Mainland Bridge, engineers have been carrying out repairs on critical structural parts including the deck soffit, piers, and underwater pile caps. The project is now about 80 per cent physically completed, with only the monitoring stage remaining. This monitoring phase is expected to last one year and is currently in its third month. Financially, about 60 per cent of the budget has been allocated, while 21 per cent of the total project value has been executed so far.

At this stage, no major construction activities remain on the Third Mainland Bridge, as attention has shifted fully to performance validation and monitoring.

Lagos Bridge Reconstruction Works at Iddo and Underpass

The Iddo Bridge rehabilitation, however, involves more extensive reconstruction due to its level of deterioration. Large sections of the bridge have been demolished and are being rebuilt using reinforced concrete girders, improved reinforcement systems, and stronger structural supports. The project has reached 30 per cent completion so far.

At the Iddo Bridge Underpass, the entire existing structure was removed to allow full reconstruction. The ongoing works include continuous reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP), upgraded drainage systems, and the installation of modern street lighting and utility infrastructure. Progress on this section has reached 38 per cent.

The company explained that CRCP systems are designed to manage cracking by allowing controlled, closely spaced cracks while ensuring reinforcement keeps them tight and prevents widening.

Overall, the rehabilitation programme is expected to enhance commuter safety, extend the lifespan of critical infrastructure, and reduce structural risks across some of Lagos State’s busiest transport corridors. It is also expected to improve traffic flow and support economic activities within the state.
