Lagos State Government has announced plans to roll out a state-issued driver’s licence in collaboration with the Federal Government as part of broader efforts to strengthen road safety and improve traffic management across Lagos.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, made the disclosure on Monday 11th May, during the 2025 ministerial press briefing held in Alausa, Ikeja. He explained that the initiative is aimed at giving motorists flexibility to choose between the existing federal driver’s licence and a new Lagos State-issued option once it becomes operational.
According to him, the reform is designed to enhance compliance with traffic rules, raise safety standards, and make the licensing process more efficient for road users. He also noted that the new system is expected to significantly reduce delays commonly experienced during licence issuance and renewal.
Licence Updates: 56,876 Driver’s Licences Processed in Lagos
On licensing performance, Osiyemi revealed that 56,876 driver’s licences were processed within the review period. This includes 27,067 new applications and 29,810 renewals, carried out in partnership with the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency and the Federal Road Safety Corps.
He further disclosed that 1,158 international driver permits were issued during the same period.
Providing updates on rail infrastructure, he stated that the first phase of the Lagos Blue Line Rail transported approximately 3.5 million passengers in 2025.
He added that the second phase extension from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko is projected to be fully completed and operational by the first quarter of 2027.
For the Lagos Red Line Rail, the state government has acquired 24 additional coaches arranged into three eight-coach sets to improve passenger capacity and service delivery.
He also noted that construction work has intensified on the proposed 68-kilometre Lagos Green Line Rail project, which will connect Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone via Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah, and Sangotedo.
