Kenya 2027: Sifuna Leads ‘Linda Nchi’ Movement Against President Ruto

Political tensions in Kenya are rising as opposition parties and civic movements hold a series of rallies across the country, demanding change from President William Ruto’s government ahead of next year’s general elections.

According to a report by WION News on Monday, August 17, 2026, the protests are being coordinated under the banner of “Linda Nchi” a Swahili phrase meaning “Safeguarding the People.” The movement is being led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

WION’s correspondent, Louisa Olaniyi, revealed that the rallies have drawn large crowds of supporters in several counties.

She noted that President Ruto is facing mounting opposition as the 2027 elections draw closer, with citizens expressing frustration over the economy, governance, and security.

The demonstrations have not been without violence. Louisa reported that groups of young people were involved in stone-throwing incidences and barricaded roads to prevent opposition leaders from accessing rally venues.

“Several opposition politicians held large rallies in counties under the safeguarding movement. A big crowd turned out. A gang of stone-throwing youths blocked roads and attacked journalists at the event,” Louisa stated.

It was also revealed that some journalists covering the rallies were attacked and robbed of their equipment.

Sifuna Leads Push for Political Change

Addressing the large supporters, Senator Sifuna took a hard line against the administration, referring to it as a “villainous, brutal regime that has been killing citizens.”

He declared that he would not support President Ruto’s government and called on Kenyans to rally behind the “Linda Nchi” movement to push for political reform.

“Enough is enough. We are here to safeguard the people,” Sifuna told the crowd.

However, Kenya remains in crisis as calls for change continue to mount from various opposition leaders and civil society groups. Security agencies have been deployed to hotspots, but analysts warn that the growing confrontations could escalate in the lead-up to the 2027 polls.

Political observers say the rallies signal a shift in opposition strategy, moving from parliamentary debate to mass mobilization on the streets.

The government is yet to issue a formal response to the latest round of protests.
