ADC Disputes Tinubu’s 10.9m Votes, Warns of 2027 Election Risks

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed concern over President Bola Tinubu’s assertion that he secured 10.99 million votes in the recently concluded APC presidential primaries, saying the figure appears inconsistent with Nigeria’s present political realities and raising questions about what it could mean for the 2027 general elections.

The party alleged that the figures represent a potential attempt to influence the electoral process in the future and insisted that such narratives must be strongly resisted. It also reaffirmed its commitment to a transparent, inclusive, and democratic process in selecting its own presidential candidate.

Former Vice President and ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, also dismissed the reported figures attributed to Tinubu, describing them as “fabricated numbers” that carry no political significance to the party. He maintained that the ADC remains focused on strengthening its structure and preparing for the polls.

The ADC further criticised President Tinubu’s recent remarks directed at opposition figures, describing them as self-serving and insensitive. The party, in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said it was ironic that such comments were coming from a leader whose administration, according to the party, would be remembered negatively in Nigeria’s democratic history.

Concerns were also raised about the APC primary results, which allegedly placed Tinubu at 10.99 million votes. The ADC described the figure as an “unbelievable concoction” and warned it could form a basis for electoral manipulation in 2027.

Speaking at the party’s collation centre in Abuja, Chairman of the ADC Presidential Primaries Election Committee, Ikechi Emenike, said democratic values are increasingly being weakened in the country’s political space. He, however, stated that the ADC is positioning itself as a model of internal democracy and electoral integrity.

The party stressed that unlike other political parties, it has embraced a credible process that allows every qualified aspirant equal opportunity to present their vision and earn support across the country. It also highlighted its presidential aspirants as Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Mohammed Hayatu-deen, describing them as capable of leading Nigeria at this time.

Atiku Abubakar, after casting his vote in Jimeta, Yola, reiterated that the ADC remains focused and confident in its ability to compete for national leadership. He insisted that the reported 10 million votes are “mere numbers” that do not threaten the party’s growing political strength or grassroots mobilisation.

He further noted that the ADC is working toward building a strong platform capable of winning elections, adding that internal disagreements are normal in political organisations and would not affect the unity or determination of the party.
