Elon Musk Reaches Historic $1 Trillion Net Worth Milestone

Elon Musk has become the first person in history to surpass a $1 trillion net worth, at least on paper, following the pricing of SpaceX’s highly anticipated initial public offering (IPO) at $135 per share.

Prior to the IPO, Musk’s estimated wealth stood at approximately $813 billion, already making him the world’s richest individual by a significant margin. According to Forbes, his fortune was more than twice that of Google co-founder Larry Page, whose net worth is estimated at $288 billion.

The official valuation of SpaceX shares at $135 each pushed Musk’s wealth slightly above the $1 trillion threshold. The company’s stock, trading under the ticker symbol “SPCX,” began trading on the Nasdaq Composite when markets opened at 9:30 a.m. on Friday.

Musk’s net worth could rise even further if SpaceX shares gain value after trading begins. However, fluctuations in the stock price could also pull his fortune back below the trillion-dollar mark.

The milestone highlights the unprecedented scale of modern wealth accumulation. A fortune of $1 trillion is comparable to the annual economic output of some of the world’s largest economies. According to World Bank data, only 19 countries currently have gross domestic products exceeding $1 trillion, including the United States and the Netherlands.

Musk’s achievement has also renewed discussions about global wealth inequality. Oxfam America’s senior director of economic justice, Nabil Ahmed, said the development reflects the growing concentration of wealth among a small number of individuals.

“Elon Musk’s rise to trillionaire status marks a new pinnacle of oligarchy,” Ahmed said.

The SpaceX IPO is also expected to create substantial wealth for employees and early investors. Reports, including those from the New York Times, indicate that around 4,400 SpaceX employees could become millionaires once the company’s shares begin trading publicly.

Despite the broader financial gains generated by the listing, Musk remains the primary beneficiary due to his substantial ownership stake in the company.

Breakdown of Musk’s SpaceX Holdings

According to SpaceX’s IPO filing, Musk owns approximately 4.8 billion shares, representing about 42 percent of the company. He also holds 350 million stock options that can be exercised at $8.39 per share.

Based on the IPO price of $135 per share, Musk’s stake in SpaceX is valued at roughly $648 billion. His stock options add another $44.3 billion to that total.

Forbes had previously estimated the value of Musk’s pre-IPO SpaceX holdings at around $500 billion. The IPO pricing therefore increased the value of his SpaceX assets by about $192.3 billion, pushing his estimated total net worth to approximately $1.005 trillion.

Oxfam noted that this level of wealth exceeds the combined assets of the bottom 46 percent of the world’s population, representing roughly 3.8 billion people globally.
