EPL: Arsenal Win First Premier League Title In 22 Years

Arsenal have finally ended their 22-year wait for a Premier League title after Manchester City were held to a dramatic 1-1 draw by AFC Bournemouth on Tuesday night.

After finishing as runners-up in each of the last three seasons, Mikel Arteta’s side finally crossed the finish line to secure the league crown and bring an end to a six-year trophy drought. Arsenal moved to the brink of glory on Monday with a narrow 1-0 victory over relegated Burnley, opening a five-point gap over City before the defending champions failed to respond.

The Gunners have led the title race for much of the campaign and recovered strongly from their defeat to City last month by winning four consecutive league matches without conceding a goal.

Meanwhile, City entered the clash under intense pressure following widespread reports that manager Pep Guardiola will leave the club at the end of the season after a decade in charge. The reports surfaced just 48 hours after Guardiola guided City to a domestic cup double with victory over Chelsea FC in the FA Cup final.

Victory at Wembley secured the 20th trophy of Guardiola’s remarkable spell at City, but the Spaniard will now miss out on adding another Premier League title to his collection. Aston Villa are set to visit the Etihad on Sunday in what is expected to be Guardiola’s final home match in charge.

City boss Guardiola had admitted before the match that fatigue could affect his players against a determined Bournemouth side still chasing a historic Champions League qualification spot. The Cherries extended their unbeaten league run to 17 games, guaranteeing European football for the first time in the club’s history.

Arsenal Clinch Premier League Title

As things stand, Bournemouth are on course for a Europa League place after ensuring they cannot finish lower than seventh. Sixth place could still secure Champions League football if Aston Villa finish fifth and go on to win Wednesday’s Europa League final.

At the Vitality Stadium, City supporters desperately chanted “One more year, Guardiola” during the opening stages as they attempted to convince their decorated manager to remain at the club for one more season.

However, the defending champions struggled to produce a convincing performance. Antoine Semenyo thought he had given Bournemouth the lead after finding the net on his return to the side, but the effort was ruled out for offside in what proved to be City’s best attacking moment of a disappointing first half.

Bournemouth eventually broke through in the 39th minute when Eli Junior Kroupi curled a stunning strike into the top corner. The goal saw the teenager set a new record with 13 goals in a debut Premier League season.

City attempted to respond immediately after the restart, but Nico O’Reilly squandered a huge opportunity after being denied by goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic just seconds into the second half.

Guardiola could only watch as City’s title hopes slipped away. Despite beating Arsenal in what had been described as the decisive clash last month, City handed the initiative back to the Gunners following their 3-3 draw against Everton earlier in the run-in.

The result also means Guardiola is set to leave having failed to win the league in consecutive seasons for the first time in his managerial career.

Bournemouth nearly added further goals as both Rayan and David Brooks struck the post during Andoni Iraola’s final home game in charge.

Although Erling Haaland rescued a late equaliser deep into stoppage time, it arrived too late to revive City’s fading title challenge.

The late goal, however, provided a major boost for Liverpool FC, who now hold a three-point advantage over Bournemouth and possess a superior goal difference of six heading into the final day battle for a top-five finish and Champions League qualification.
