The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has strengthened its drive toward improved data governance in the country through the signing of separate Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) and the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF).
According to a statement by Itunu Dosekun, Head, Media Unit,NDPC. The agreements are aimed at reinforcing data protection and privacy standards across Nigeria’s public sector and subnational institutions.
Speaking at the signing ceremony with the BPP, the National Commissioner/CEO of the NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunji, commended the Bureau’s leadership for prioritising privacy and data governance. He described data privacy as “a global imperative for building trust, confidence, and credibility within the digital ecosystem,” adding that the Commission remains committed to integrating robust data protection standards within Nigeria’s procurement framework.
In his response, the Director-General of the BPP, Dr Adebowale Adedokun, reaffirmed the Bureau’s commitment to ethical data management and compliance with global best practices. He noted that “the unlawful disclosure of government information is a criminal offence,” stressing the need to strengthen safeguards as technology adoption increases across government operations.
NDPC Expands Capacity Building Through BPP and NGF Partnerships
As part of the collaboration, Dr Olatunji announced the provision of 50 Virtual Privacy Academy vouchers for BPP staff to enhance capacity in data protection and privacy. Dr Adedokun welcomed the initiative and further proposed expanded training opportunities for the Bureau’s 453 procurement officers nationwide.
In a related development, the NDPC also signed an MoU with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to deepen data protection implementation at the state level. Dr Olatunji, while speaking at the event, praised the NGF for its readiness to support responsible data governance, noting that “compliance with data protection obligations is critical to strengthening privacy frameworks across our states, thereby accelerating nationwide adoption, enhancing investor confidence, as well as foreign direct investment.”
Reaffirming the commitment of the Forum, the Director-General of the NGF, Dr Abdulateef Shittu, described the partnership as “a strategic step towards securing Nigeria’s digital ecosystem and advancing responsible data governance at the subnational level.”
To ensure effective execution of both agreements, the NDPC confirmed the establishment of dedicated working groups with the BPP and NGF to develop actionable frameworks for swift implementation.
