A comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, has been approved by the Federal Executive Council, FEC on monday, June 29th, 2026.
According to reports, the decision which was announced by the Minister of Youth Development after a FEC meeting presided by the President, Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.This is the first major step taken on the review of the 53 years scheme since it was established in 1973.
Henceforth, under the new policy, orientation camp would run for six weeks which will double the current three weeks duration period . Olawande noted that the extended curriculum is structured in 3 distinct phases which includes-
Weeks 1-2: Civic Foundation. Corp.members will gain training on civic responsibility, national values and leadership development
Weeks 3 -4: Career and Enterprise – This phase concentrates on career mapping, basic accounting literacy , business planning, access to finance and a structured career day to relate directly with employers
Weeks 5-6: Specialised Stream Training.. Members of the Corps will receive specialised training aligned with their chosen stream based on their academic qualifications and skills profile.
FEC Approves NYSC Safety, Tech, and Governance Reforms
It was disclosed further that the FEC also approved other landmark reforms such as a technology – driven call up process for greater transparency.
Risk sensitive development for improved protection of corp members In volatile areas with high risk insecurity challenges
Modern governance structure where military still retains security support with civilian operational leadership
Improved Camp Standards through national.grading and certification system. A new graduation ceremony that will replace previous passing out parade along side a redesigned NYSC inform.
Additionally, Olawande described the reforms as an investment in Nigeria youth. He urged the youth to align with President Tinubu’s vision of building a $1 trillion economy.
Further more, it was disclosed that the Federal Government declared that the NYSC is ” a skills driven, productivity-focused and youth empowering institution “.
The orientation course is one out of the four cardinal.programmes for NYSC orientations which instills discipline, leadership, teamwork and national unity.
