At least 1,094 Nigerians have registered interest in voluntary return from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks. This marks a sharp rise from the earlier figure of 130 individuals who initially sought repatriation, according to the Nigerian foreign ministry.
A joint screening exercise is currently underway to determine eligibility for evacuation. The process involves officials from Nigeria’s foreign ministry, South African immigration authorities, and police representatives from both countries.
According to spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, the screening exercise is expected to conclude on Saturday. Only individuals who successfully pass the verification process will be cleared for repatriation, after which final numbers and flight arrangements will be confirmed.
Xenophobia: South Africa Eases Repatriation Rules
South African authorities have also agreed to waive penalties for visa-related violations, including overstays. However, persons facing criminal charges will not be permitted to leave under the evacuation arrangement.
Ebienfa further explained that Nigeria had submitted its list for clearance ahead of Ghana, although Ghana was prioritised in the process. Ethiopia is expected to follow Nigeria, with full repatriation logistics to be finalised after screening is completed.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian government has strongly condemned the ongoing violence against its citizens in South Africa, including reports of two nationals allegedly killed following assaults by security personnel.
