Nigeria has officially launched a nationwide National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, aimed at improving address identification and making it easier to locate homes, businesses and other facilities across the country.
The system was unveiled on October 1, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and improve services that depend on accurate location data.
According to the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, the postcode system will help connect Nigerians to services and opportunities by providing more precise location information.
The system assigns an 11-character, GIS-enabled postcode to addressable buildings, with locations identified through multiple levels ranging from the state to individual structures.
The new system is expected to support areas such as e-commerce, logistics, emergency response, banking and government service delivery by reducing reliance on informal directions and difficult-to-identify locations.
NIPOST said the initiative followed a successful pilot programme in Abuja and is now available nationwide. Users can find their postcodes through the official postcode platform at postcode.gov.ng
The system also includes an API that developers can integrate into digital services and applications requiring accurate location information.
The launch has attracted reactions from Nigerians online, with some users reporting that they had successfully retrieved their postcodes. Others raised issues involving incorrect house numbers and called for further improvements to the system.
The Minister said the launch marks the beginning of a broader effort to integrate postcodes into everyday activities, businesses and public services across Nigeria.
