The 2026 Catholic Lagos Archdiocesan Council of Board of Lectors (LACBOL) Quiz Competition was an exciting display of faith, knowledge, and fellowship that took place on Saturday, August 22, 2026 at the Catholic Church of the Transfiguration, Victoria Garden City, Lekki.
The highly competitive event which combined spiritual formation with healthy academic rivalry had about 200 lectors from across the Lagos Archdiocese in attendance
The competition commenced with a prayer led by the Quiz Master, Rev. Fr. Anthony Onyema.
In her welcome address, the Chairman of Lekki Deanery, Chika Ofulue, described the quiz as more than a contest. “This is a time to bond with one another and a learning process that deepens our love for the Word of God,”she said.
The Chairperson of the host parish, Esther Osagiobare corroborated, noting that ” the competition is not just about answering questions or competing for points. It is an opportunity for lectors to deepen their knowledge and strengthen their commitment to the ministry of proclaiming God’s Word, to which we belong.”
LACBOL Quiz: Results, Winners and Key Highlights
This year’s competition featured 19 out of 20 deaneries in the Archdiocese. Ajah Deanery did not participate.
The contest was decided across three categories ,-
- Spelling Bee- Biblical terms and Church vocabulary
- Main Quiz – Scriptures and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, CCC
- Sword Drill – Speed and accuracy in locating Bible passages
Meanwhile the event was moderated by the dynamic Mr. Ezenna Obasi, whose engaging style kept the atmosphere both competitive and lively.
After three intense rounds of questions and answers, Badagry Deanery emerged as Overall Champion with 17 points, followed by Iba deanery as 1st Runner – up with an incredibly close 16.5,points and Ilemba Deanery as 2nd Runner – up with 16 points after an impressive tie – break with Apapa Deanery
The gap between 1st and 10th place was just 3 points showing how competitive the field was. While top performers like Iba and Ilemba scored only 3 points in the Spelling Bee, they made up for it with strong showings in Scripture, CCC, and Sword Drill.
However, the following were derived from the scores and the placement –
Special Category Awards-
- Best Spelling Bee Team: Agege Deanery
- Best Sword Drill Team: Maryland Deanery
- Most Consistent Performance: Iba Deanery
- Best Tie-Break Performance: Ilemba Deanery
- Overall Champion: Badagry Deanery
- First Runner-up: Iba Deanery
- Second Runner-up: Ilemba Deanery
Notably, only 1 point separated the top four deaneries, Badagry, Iba, Ilemba, and Apapa. While Agege and Maryland dominated the special categories, the most balanced and sustained performances came from the top four, which explains their overall standings.
The event concluded with the presentation of trophies to winners and a closing remark by the LACBOL Secretary, Mr. Pope Isioma Anyibuofi
. 
The annual quiz is organized by the LACBOL Lectors Academy, chaired by Mr. Anthony Enakhifo. Its goal is to educate lectors in all aspects of Church doctrine and the Holy Bible as part of their ongoing formation.
Specifically, the competition aims to:
- Promote biblical literacy among lectors
- Encourage meditation on Sacred Scripture for more effective proclamation
- Foster unity, active participation, and healthy academic competition across all deaneries in the Archdiocese
The 2026 edition once again proved that when lectors come together to study the Word, the result is not just winners and points, but a deeper commitment to the ministry of the Word.
