United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has paid glowing tribute to Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, following the news of his passing. During a condolence visit to Nigeria House in New York on Friday, Guterres described Buhari as a leader whose legacy of dedication to Nigeria, Africa, and multilateral cooperation would endure for generations.
Guterres signed the condolence register at the Nigerian mission, where he conveyed the UN’s solidarity with the Nigerian government and people.
“On behalf of the United Nations, I extend my heartfelt condolences on the passing of His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari,” Guterres wrote. “He will be remembered for his steadfast commitment to selfless service, his leadership in advancing peace and stability across Africa, and his dedication to strengthening institutions in Nigeria.”
He also commended Buhari’s global role as a staunch supporter of the UN and multilateral diplomacy, stating, “President Buhari was a strong voice for multilateralism, solidarity, and sustainable development.”
In a conversation with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) following the visit, Guterres spoke warmly of his working relationship with Buhari, describing him as “a true servant-leader” and “an extraordinary figure” in African and global affairs.
“I had the privilege to work with President Buhari and was deeply impressed by his unwavering commitment—not only to Nigeria but also to the African continent, sustainable development, and the ideals of the United Nations,” he said.

Guterres praised Buhari’s leadership role in promoting regional peace and stability in West Africa, calling him “a stabilising force” and “a key figure in asserting Nigeria’s leadership during challenging times.”
He assured that the UN’s thoughts are with Buhari’s family and the people of Nigeria, adding, “His contributions will remain deeply appreciated and his legacy will inspire future generations.”
The Chargé d’Affaires of Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the UN, Mr. Syndoph Endoni, expressed gratitude for Guterres’ visit, noting that it reflected Buhari’s stature as a respected global statesman.
Other Nigerian officials present during the visit included Bola Asaju and the Head of Chancery, Mr. Razak Lawal.
Muhammadu Buhari, who ruled Nigeria as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and later as an elected president from 2015 – 2023, died on Sunday at the age of 82 in a London hospital. He was buried on Tuesday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
